Japan Under-23 defender Takuya Iwanami has been ruled out for six weeks after suffering a left-knee injury during the Toulon Tournament, his club Vissel Kobe announced Friday.

The center-half came off on the half hour in Japan's 2-1 loss to Paraguay on Saturday. On Thursday, he returned to Japan, where the damage to his medial collateral ligament was confirmed.

Japan was already knocked out of the tournament in France ahead of its final group game against England on Friday after winning once and losing twice.

Manager Makoto Teguramori's team will face Nigeria on Aug. 4 in its first match of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics before meeting Colombia and Sweden in the group stage.
