Mongolian yokozuna Hakuho’s record sumo career has been recognized by Guinness World Records, the champion revealed Thursday on his blog.

Hakuho claimed his 33rd career title in January to surpass the 32 wins amassed by Taiho, who claimed his last title in 1971 and has long been considered the greatest sumo wrestler in the postwar period.

"More than 40 years after Taiho-san set his winning record, I could surpass it this year and it won recognition by Guinness World Records. Thank you for your support again this year," wrote Hakuho.

The 30-year-old took his tally to 35 after also prevailing in the March and July tournaments.
