Sprinter Yoshihide Kiryu settled for third in the men's 200 meters on the opening day of the Oda Memorial International meet on Saturday.

Kiryu clocked a time of 20.80 seconds with a tailwind of 1.5 meters per second to finish behind Kenji Fujimitsu and Akiyuki Hashimoto, who crossed in 20.43 and 20.71, respectively.

"I am disappointed. It's a shock," said Kiryu. "I felt that I had already lost before the race started. I should have gone faster in the first half, but there's nothing I can do now that it's over."

Chisato Fukushima won the women's 200 in 23.54.

Kiryu, who ran 9.87 for an unofficial wind-assisted record in the men's 100 meters at a meet in Austin, Texas, last month, is aiming for a sub-10 mark in the race on Sunday.
