Yokozuna Hakuho remained on the proverbial war path toward his sixth consecutive championship, moving into sole possession of the lead with an unblemished mark as the second week of the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament kicked off on Sunday.

While rival yokozuna Harumafuji fell to his second loss at the hands of Tochinoshin, and sekiwake Terunofuji and veteran journeyman Aminishiki both suffered their first defeats, sumo's all-time record holder Hakuho fell into a familiar position: having breathing room to capture another Emperor's Cup as he improved to 8-0.

Hakuho, who is seeking his 34th career title, closely eyed Toyonoshima (6-2) as he kept him at bay with his thrusts before using his left for a chokehold to send his opponent fleeing over the ridge in front of a packed house at Bodymaker Colosseum.
