Katsuhiko Kumazaki, a former Tokyo district prosecutor, is set to be named as the new commissioner of Nippon Professional Baseball, Kyodo News learned Tuesday.

An extraordinary meeting will be held on Thursday, when the appointment is expected to be approved. The creation of the post of secretary general is also being considered, and the new No. 2 would likely be chosen from the financial sector.

Kumazaki, who has been an adviser to the commissioner since 2005, became a prosecutor in 1972. He will succeed Ryozo Kato, who resigned in October to take the fall over the secretly modified baseball for this season.

Kumazaki had the backing of the Central League teams while those of the Pacific League wanted someone with a business background. The two sides reached a compromise by agreeing on adding a secretary general at NPB.
