Hideki Matsuyama, who has designs on a career on the U.S. tour, on Sunday won the Diamond Cup to earn his second JGTO victory since he turned pro in April.
The 21-year-old student at Sendai's Tohoku Fukushi University held on to the overnight lead he shared with tour legend Tsuneyuki Nakajima with a final-round 71 to finish at 9-under-par 279. Since finishing 10th in his pro debut, Matsuyama has two runnerup finishes to go with his pair of victories.
Two weeks after blowing a four-stroke, final-round lead at Japan PGA Championship, Matsuyama carded four birdies against three bogies to win by two strokes over South Korea's Kim Hyung-sung and Australia's Brad Kennedy. In addition to his two pro victories, Matsuyama also won one JGTO event as an amateur.
"Blowing my lead at the Japan PGA Championship was still in my head. I was thinking, 'I could lose today, too.' I am glad I was able to win," said Matsuyama.
