Hideki Matsuyama overcame a two-stroke deficit on Sunday to win the Tsuruya Open in only his second event as a professional on the JGTO Tour.
The 21-year-old, who became the third amateur in history to win on the tour when he captured the 2011 Taiheiyo Masters, finished top of the leaderboard at 18-under 266.
It is the first time since the JGTO Tour was launched in 1999 that a player has won in his second tournament after turning pro. Matsuyama announced his decision to turn pro on April 2 and he finished tied for 10th in his first event at last week's Token Homemate Cup.
Born in Ehime Prefecture, Matsuyama graduated from Meitoku Gijuku High School in Kochi Prefecture — one of the most renowned schools in the country for producing professional athletes — before enrolling at Tohoku Fukushi University in 2010 when he was crowned Asian amateur champion.
He won accolades for his debut performance at the 2011 Masters by placing in a tie for 27th for the top finish by an amateur.
