Haruna Asami successfully defended her title of the women's 48-kg class with a win over compatriot Tomoko Fukumi at the 2011 World Judo Championships on Tuesday.
Asami beat Fukumi on "yusei" points, defeating her rival for the second year in a row after her triumph in the final of the Tokyo meet last September. Fukumi failed in her bid for her first gold medal in two years.
Masashi Ebinuma, meanwhile, claimed his first gold medal in the men's 66-kg category, defeating 2010 runnerup Leandro Cunha of Brazil by ippon in the final.
