Rice cracker maker Kameda Seika Co. plans to appoint Canada's outgoing ambassador to Japan as an outside board member. The appointment of Mackenzie Donald Clugston will require approval at a general shareholders meeting on June 17.

The firm said Monday that although Clugston lacks experience of corporate management, he has a thorough knowledge of business and extensive experience of administration and international negotiations.

With his global perspective, the company expects the former diplomat to enhance the board of directors.

The 65-year-old diplomat ended his term as ambassador to Japan on Sunday, having served in the post since November 2012. The two sides had no particular relation in the past.
