Spending ¥5 million on a wedding ceremony requires a big decision for many, but a con man in Oita Prefecture held his own for free — and ended up behind bars.

Oita police on Tuesday arrested Hiromu Chiku, 27, for allegedly defrauding ¥5.09 million from a wedding company in March 2014 by not paying the bill for his nuptials, the police said.

He has partially denied the allegation, investigators said.

According to the police, Chiku tried to separate the payment in two occasions and produced a bogus bank document showing he had already transferred ¥2.3 million to the wedding company before his March 21, 2014, wedding.

On that day, Chiku showed the faked payment document to company staff, telling them he would pay the rest of the bill after the ceremony.

The wedding company later realized the suspect never paid from the beginning and filed a criminal complaint in December that year.
