The Okinawa prefectural government filed a suit against the central government Friday over the relocation of a U.S. military base to another site on the island, after a third-party arbitration panel rejected reviewing Okinawa's complaint.

Filed with the Naha District Court, the suit challenges the state's decision to overrule a prefectural attempt to block landfill work for the relocation of U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.

Okinawa's move came after Mitsuo Kobayakawa, chairman of the Central and Local Government Dispute Management Council, told a news conference in Tokyo that the complaint over the central government's decision to overrule a prefectural attempt to block landfill work for the base relocation is not suitable for review by the panel.
