The Tokyo Metropolitan Government plans to set up facilities to show live footage of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics and Paralympics next year in Tokyo, as well as in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, which were hit by Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

The venues will include Ueno Park in Tokyo's Taito Ward, Showa Kinen Park in the Tokyo suburb of Tachikawa and parks in the three prefectures.

At these places, people can watch the games on huge screens in August and September. Athletes who competed in past Olympics and Paralympics will be invited to the viewing events and spaces will be provided for visitors to experience Paralympics.

"Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, we want to first liven up the atmosphere during the Rio de Janeiro games with people in the disaster-hit areas," said an official at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
