A van crashed into a cake shop in Aichi Prefecture on Saturday, injuring a dozen customers and employees, police said, but none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The driver, Kuniichi Hotta, 76, was arrested at the scene after allegedly driving his van into the flagship branch of Fujitaya, a regional chain, in Chiryu at around 2 p.m.

Hotta, a Chiryu resident, was detained on suspicion of improper operation of a motor vehicle.

Seven people, ranging in age from their teens to their 70s, were hospitalized, including a high school student who sustained a serious injury to her right leg.

Police quoted Hotta as saying that he stepped on the accelerator by mistake when he intended to apply the brakes. Hotta was not injured.

The accident occurred when Hotta was leaving after doing some maintenance work at the shop, which also has a dining room.

There were about 30 customers and sales clerks in the store at the time.
