An Akita Prefecture man was turned over to prosecutors Monday on suspicion of stabbing a taxi driver to death.

Jin Azumaya, 55, a part-time worker from Kazuno, was arrested Sunday for allegedly robbing and killing Yoshitsugi Tanaka, a 66-year-old taxi driver.

Azumaya has reportedly admitted to stabbing Tanaka but has been unclear about the robbery charge.

The police suspect Azumaya stabbed Tanaka and then ran him over with his own car, which was parked nearby.

Tanaka was found at around 10 p.m. Saturday lying on the ground, covered in blood, near his taxi in the parking lot of Michino Eki Kazuno, a roadside restaurant in Kazuno that also sells regional goods.

He had sustained multiple stab wounds in the abdomen and was confirmed dead at a nearby hospital.

Surveillance footage from inside the taxi shows a masked man threatening Tanaka with a knife and demanding money. According to the taxi company, Tanaka had been dispatched to pick up a man who called at around 9 p.m. Saturday asking to have a cab sent to a local supermarket.

The Akita Prefectural Police said the taxi's engine was still running and one of its back doors was open when Tanaka was found.

The roadside shop closes at 6 p.m. and the parking lot's lights were turned off at the time of the incident.
