All five Japanese students competing at this year's International Physics Olympiad in India won awards — a gold medal, two silvers and two bronzes, the education ministry said Sunday.

The teenagers were taking part in the 46th annual physics competition in Mumbai that started July 5, ministry officials said.

The Olympiad drew 382 students from 82 countries, who competed by solving problems during theoretical and practical sessions.

Akihiro Watanabe, 16, from Todaiji Gakuen Senior High School in Nara Prefecture won a gold medal, while silver medals were given to Hideharu Kashyu, 17, from Nada Senior High School in Hyogo Prefecture and Satoshi Yoshida, 16, from Osaka Seiko Gakuin High School.

Winning bronze medals were Hajime Ueda, 16, from Nada and Hiroto Takahashi, 17, from Tokyo Metropolitan Koishikawa Secondary Education School.

The first International Physics Olympiad was held in Poland in 1967.
