Secretary of State John Kerry will invite Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to dinner in Boston on Sunday after the Japanese leader arrives at the first destination on his trip to the United States, the State Department said Tuesday.

The dinner will take place at Kerry's private residence and Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida will also take part, the department's spokeswoman, Marie Harf, told reporters.

The event will be part of Abe's official visit to the United States, which also takes him to Washington, San Francisco and Los Angeles. He is scheduled to hold a summit with President Barack Obama on April 28.

The department said Kerry will move to New York the following day to take part in a "two-plus-two" bilateral security meeting with Japan involving foreign and defense ministers from both countries.

Kerry last October similarly invited Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi, the country's top diplomat, to dine with him at his residence in Boston in a bid to enhance bilateral cooperation with Beijing.
