A debate over how to use the Austrian house where Adolf Hitler was born has kept the government and people of the country in deadlock, highlighting the difficulties in facing the local history.

Hitler, who became Nazi Germany's dictator, was born in the house in Braunau on the Inn, a town on the German border in 1889. The property has remained empty for more than three years, with the government and a private owner discussing its possible use almost fruitlessly.

The family of Hitler is believed to have spent only several weeks in the house while living in the town for about three years.
