The Osaka District Court, in a rare move, recently ordered that a suspect in a financial fraud case be moved to a detention center from police custody, noting that police are not recording the questioning of the suspect either by audio or video, according to the suspect's lawyer.

The lawyer representing the 21-year-old man, who is now on trial at the court's Sakai branch, said a transfer request was made after the police allegedly verbally abused the man during questioning following his arrest in December.

Police are allowed by law to maintain pretrial custody of arrested suspects in police cells even after their cases have been passed on to prosecutors, instead of moving them to detention centers run by the Justice Ministry.
