Japanese prosecutors charged the father of fashion model and TV personality Rola for fraud involving medical benefits on Wednesday.

According to the indictment, Bangladeshi national Jurip Al-Asa, 54, swindled the municipal government of Tama in western Tokyo out of around ¥980,000 (about $8,500) in benefits in April 2007 by falsely claiming he had received medical treatment in Bangladesh for a month after contracting dengue fever.

In July, Tokyo police arrested Al-Asa on suspicion of defrauding Tokyo's Setagaya Ward of around ¥875,000 in benefits between December 2008 and January 2009.

The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office released Al-Asa in August without indicting him. But the police arrested him again in October over the benefit payments he received from the Tama government.

Prosecutors will continue to investigate the father of the 24-year-old fashion model over the benefits he allegedly received from Setagaya Ward.

Al-Asa is a permanent resident of Japan. Individuals covered by the Japanese public health insurance system, including foreign residents, who receive medical treatment abroad are entitled to a certain amount of reimbursement.
