A 33-year-old Japanese diplomat was sentenced to one year in prison Monday for domestic violence against his wife.

Yoshiaki Nagaya, a vice consul at the Japanese Consulate General in San Francisco, was found guilty of kicking his wife at their home in San Francisco in May and September 2011. The wife suffered bruises to her body.

Nagaya, who was indicted on 17 counts of domestic violence and of assault and injury against his wife, initially pleaded not guilty at the San Mateo county court but reached a plea-bargain agreement on two cases.

Nagaya, from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, handled economic affairs.
