Japan tourism record broken in 2015

Sample newspaper article

(Jan. 20)

Translation

A record 19.73 million foreigners visited Japan in 2015, a 47.3 percent increase over the 13.41 million who visited in 2014, the Japan National Tourism Organization said on Jan. 19. The JNTO said that this is the first time in 45 years that the number of incoming travelers surpassed the outbound figure. The announcement confirms that the government is almost sure to achieve its target of attracting 20 million foreign visitors a year by 2020. Tourism officials attribute the hike in tourism numbers to the weak yen and more international flights in and out of Haneda Airport by low-cost carriers, as well as the easing of visa regulations for countries in Southeast Asia. Travelers from China topped the list for 2015, accounting for 4.99 million. They were followed by 4 million from South Korea and 3.67 million from Taiwan. Spending by foreign visitors also reached a record ¥3.48 trillion.
