What happens when curators from various Japanese museums are given free rein to select works from the thousands housed by the British Council, Britain's international organization for education and cultural relations?
"Private Utopia" is a vivid exhibition of works by contemporary British artists, all chosen by prominent curators in Japan. It covers a vast variety of themes, ideas and materials, and spans genres to include painting, photography, film and installations.
Approximately 30 artists represented by the British Council are included, many of whom are well known, such as Gary Hume and David Shrigley. Works were chosen for their ruminative nature, and the wide scope of the show aims to help visitors understand the broadening definition of "art" and its future potential. Jan. 18-Mar. 9.
