After the Meiji Restoration of 1868, as Japan continued to open its ports to trade, the government also introduced Western music to education curriculums as part of its attempt to construct a more modern, globalized nation.
This exhibition showcases the drastic changes in music as Japan transitioned from a culture of isolation to one that adopted Western aesthetics. Works on display include those from the Archives of Modern Japanese Music at Meiji Gakuin University Library as well as some on loan from private collectors. This multi-dimensional presentation of cultural history presents music as a true international language; Oct. 11-Dec. 23.
