Yokohama is a city steeped in its own distinct history, despite its proximity to the capital. The key difference between Yokohama and Tokyo historically, is the port, which was opened on June 2, 1859.
This weekend, The Yokohama Centraltown Festival celebrates the city 152 years after the opening of its port. It will run till June 5 and will offer a massive variety of performances sprawling across five zones, from Bashamichi Station to the Motomachi shopping district.
Highlights of the main-stage area, which is in the Yamashita Park zone, include the popular Hamakoi Dance, which will feature 45 groups. There will also be concerts taking place June 4 and 5. Near the main stage, visitors will be able to get a taste of the Tohoku region at the food corner. A portion of those revenues will go to the disaster-stricken northeast.
