Bausch's legacy blossoms as emotions unfold on stage
When the curtain opens on a stage blanketed in silk flowers, a beginner might think "Nelken" ("Carnations") by Pina Bausch was about to offer some sweetly whimsical vision of poetry in three dimensions. That, however, would be to ignore dark underlying themes of power and love, and a certain sagacious humor, for which the late, great German choreographer is renowned.

The Onodera enigma
The name of the late great Pina Bausch's acclaimed Tanztheater in the German city of Wuppertal may translate as "Dancetheater," but its works often owe more to abstract emotional action and snatched dialogue than to dance. Over in London, meanwhile, Simon McBurney's Complicite company has long been at the cutting edge of physical theater — so much so that its works have profoundly influenced the nation's erstwhile style of speech-focused drama oft-ridiculed for its "actors who only move from the neck up."

Etw.Vonneguet designer draws inspiration from Pina Bausch for new collection
Under the alias "Olga," the Japanese designer behind Etw.Vonneguet has long been part of the official Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo, all the while challenging the institution by opening public auditions for models and welcoming anyone to her shows. This time she will break away from the official event to show a collection as part of the Shibuya Fashion Festival (2:30 p.m. on Oct. 19th; Miyashita Park in Shibuya-ku, Tokyo). Rescuing the unemployed
The Democratic Party of Japan-led administration, to be launched shortly, should do whatever it can to improve the employment situation, as both regular and irregular workers are suffering. Government efforts would help put the Japanese economy on a path to recovery.
