One Direction takes the J-pop path to success
By the group's standards, it was a low-key finale. When One Direction completed its eight-month Take Me Home Tour at the second of two Makuhari Messe shows last Sunday in Chiba, it was in front of a relatively compact audience of 12,000 Japanese fans, whose adoration seemed good-humored rather than hysterical. If you'd read reports from earlier gigs, it was almost anticlimactic: where were the onstage pie-fights, the tampon throwing, the teenage girls so overcome with hormonal lust that, as GQ magazine put it, they were "turning themselves inside out, some almost literally"?

McCartney, One Direction and Atoms for Peace head to Japan in November
He's been knighted, named the richest rock star in the world, has an Oscar, has done a guest spot on "The Simpsons," has played to the largest stadium audience in history and has been imprisoned right here in Japan. That's right, rock god Sir Paul McCartney returns to Japan after an 11-year hiatus in support of his latest album, "New." Japan has always loved The Beatles, so it has been no surprise to see tickets for each of the six stops on the Japan leg of his "Out There" tour sell quickly — even at ¥12,500. McCartney will be showering Japanese fans in rock history starting at Osaka Dome on Nov. 11 and 12, moving on to Fukuoka Dome on Nov. 15, and finishing up the tour with three shows at Tokyo Dome on Nov. 18, 19 and 21 (7 p.m. start; ¥12,500-¥16,500).

One Direction's new movie is a sign of the times
Those of us discreetly looking forward to a theatrically released film featuring One Direction were perhaps hoping for something more captivating and ingenious than a glorified electronic press kit. We wanted something that didn't represent the depthless, scandal-mongering, narrow-minded, pleasure-seeking spirit of the times; the efficient result of a few business meetings, and the occasional quasi-creative one, that would then rely on cultural obedience to generate the babbling publicity necessary for it to be certified an authentic cultural event.
