The EU is on firm ground when it comes to film
The European Union might be teetering on the brink of collapse politically, but culturally it's still presenting a united front. EU Film Days, a showcase of movies from Portugal to Lithuania, Finland to Greece, is entering its sixth year in Japan, with daily screenings throughout the rainy season at the National Film Center in Tokyo and The Museum of Kyoto. The movies date from 2011 through 2016, and with few exceptions have not been released in Japan; many have English as well as Japanese subtitles.

Festival of off-center European films comes to Tokyo and Kyoto
One of the main goals of a film festival is to show movies that audiences won't get to see otherwise. For the festival operators there's another objective: testing reactions to films and stories, and using that information for marketing purposes. And with the number of film festivals being held in Japan on the rise, it's a win-win. If you want to see quality movies that may not get a theatrical release (and to encourage distributors to bring over more interesting movies), visit your local film fest for a sampling of undiscovered gems.

EU Film Days unfreezes movie options
Though it might not seem like it right now, films and animation other than "Frozen" do exist, and the EU Film Days 2014 festival could be a good way to explore some alternatives. This weekend, 30 films reflecting different cultural preferences in film aesthetics of 23 EU member countries are being shown at the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art. It's the 12th anniversary of the festival, which was originally launched as a part of EU-Japan friendship week in 2001.
