Japan wins in rout to advance to semifinals

Sugiuchi helps 'Hoshino Japan' shut out weak-hitting Netherlands
"Hoshino Japan" cleanup hitter Takahiro Arai tripled in two runs and starter Toshiya Sugiuchi pitched seven solid innings as Japan routed the Netherlands 6-0 Friday night in the Beijing Olympic baseball preliminaries. Japan started off with four runs in the first inning featuring Hanshin Tigers slugger Arai's first hit in Beijing, while Takahiko G.G. Sato of the Seibu Lions added a solo homer in a two-run eighth at Wukesong Baseball Field.

Hoshino ready for Australia
Japanese national team manager Senichi Hoshino promised Wednesday that his team's two exhibition games against Australia will be a battle, not a tuneup, before the Dec. 1-3 Asian-zone Beijing Olympic qualifiers. "I don't think we should call this two-game series a tuneup. We are definitely in a battle mode. We'll play our baseball and win," said Hoshino prior to a practice at Yahoo Dome, where Japan plays its final games on Thursday and Friday before leaving for Taiwan the following day.
