Japan began the women's volleyball world championships in style on Sunday, cruising past Colombia 25-20, 25-22, 25-17 in Pool D.

Arisa Inoue led the scoring with 21 points with Sarina Koga chipping in 16 and Kotona Hayashi 14 during the comfortable win in Arnhem, the Netherlands, which is co-hosting the tournament with Poland.

The quadrennial tournament pits 24 countries against each other in four pools of six in phase 1, with the top four teams from each pool progressing to two pools in phase 2.

Japan takes on the Czech Republic, China, Brazil and Argentina through Sunday in Pool D.
