Shohei Ono won the International Judo Federation's Judoka of the Year Award for men on Friday after capturing his first Olympic medal in Rio de Janeiro, where he triumphed in the men's 73-kg category.

Ono, 24, received 2,166 votes on the IJF Facebook page, ahead of two-time over-100-kg gold medalist Teddy Riner of France (983) and 66-kg champion Fabio Basile of Italy (668).

Kosovo's Majlinda Kelmendi, who marked her country's first Olympiad by winning gold in the women's 52-kg title, received 5,299 votes to earn the women's award.

Brazil's 57-kg gold medalist, Rafaela Silva, was second with 2,565 votes.
