Daiya Seto won bronze medals in the men's 200-meter individual medley and 200-meter butterfly on the opening day of the world short-course swimming championships Tuesday.

Seto, bronze medalist in the 400 individual medley at the Rio Olympics in August, clocked 1 minute, 52.89 seconds in the 200-meter version's final at the 25-meter pool in Windsor, Ontario, finishing 1.15 seconds after China's Wang Shun.

Germany's Philip Heintz was runner-up, while Takeharu Fujimoto of Japan came in seventh in the eight-man final.

In the 200 butterfly final, Seto touched the wall in 1:49.97, more than a second slower than the Japan national record he holds and finishing behind Chad le Clos of South Africa and American Tom Shields. Nao Horomura was eighth.

"I couldn't race the way I wanted to in both events," said Seto, who was looking for gold. "My body isn't moving well. The bus from the lodging didn't come on time so I didn't have enough time to warm up."

Among other Japanese results, the women's and men's teams both ended in fifth in the 4x100 freestyle relay, while Yui Ohashi was sixth in the women's 400 individual medley.
