Right-hander Shun Yamaguchi, who declared himself a free agent from the Yokohama BayStars last month, is joining the Giants, Yomiuri general manager Tatsuyoshi Tsutsumi said Thursday.

Tsutsumi said Yamaguchi, 29, contacted him around noon and told him he wants to play for the Giants. He is scheduled to hold a news conference on Monday.

Yomiuri won the battle with the Chunichi Dragons to acquire Yamaguchi.

"We started negotiations to sign him with the hope of him becoming a member of the starting rotation. I am really pleased," said Tsutsumi.

Yamaguchi joined the BayStars in 2006 as a first-round draft pick out of Yanagigaura High School in Oita Prefecture, and has gone 39-44 with 111 saves and a 3.29 ERA in 367 games over his career.

This past season, he had a team-high 11 wins against five losses with a 2.86 ERA in 19 games. He led the CL with three shutouts and shared the lead with Giants right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano with five complete games.
