Rio gold medalist Kosuke Hagino has had successful surgery on his right elbow, his coach, Norimasa Hirai, said Friday.

The 22-year-old Hagino, who won his first Olympic gold medal last month in the men's 400-meter individual medley in Rio de Janeiro, had a bone growth removed on Wednesday. The growth had resulted from a broken elbow he suffered in June 2015.

"We'll be prudent while we monitor his progress," said Hirai, who added that Hagino will have his cast removed in the coming days before resuming training on solid ground with a focus on lower body work.

Hagino will not return to competition this year as he focuses on rehab. That will force him out of two events in Tokyo, a World Cup meet in late October and November's Asian championships.
