Rio Olympic women's 200-meter breaststroke gold medalist Rie Kaneto missed a place on the podium when she finished fourth in the 100 breast final on the first day of a short-course World Cup meet on Friday.
Kaneto set a short-course personal-best time of 1 minute, 5.25 seconds in the morning heats, but could only manage 1:05.34 in the final.
Alia Atkinson of Jamaica tied the world record of 1:02.36 to win the race, while American Katie Meili took second in 1:03.52. Russia's Yuiliya Efimova was third in 1:04.14 and Satomi Suzuki was seventh.
"I posted a personal best in the heats so I am not in bad shape," said Kaneto. "Hopefully I can record a personal best in the 200."
Also for Japan, Shinri Shioura was second in the men's 100 freestyle. Hiromasa Fujimori placed third in the men's 100 individual medley won by Russia's Vladimir Morozov in a world-record time of 50.60 seconds.
Miho Takahashi finished third in the women's 200 medley and fifth in the 800 freestyle.
