Belgium’s Greg van Avermaet turned on the jets just before the line to outsprint Denmark’s Jakob Fuglsang for the men’s cycling road race gold on the first day of full competition at the Rio Olympics on Saturday.

Polish bronze medalist Rafal Majka was caught with just 1.3 of the 237.5 km to go after the Pole had spent some 15 km in the lead, initially with two others who crashed on the final descent, but he had nothing left to fight the fast finishing van Avermaet and Fuglsang.
