DUESSELDORF, GERMANY – World champion Shohei Ono took a step toward a place at this summer’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics by capturing the men’s 73-kg title on Saturday at the Duesseldorf Grand Prix.
Ono defeated top-ranked South Korean An Chang-rim in the semifinals before taking out world No. 2 Rustam Orujov of Azerbaijan with an uchimata throw to win the gold medal.
In the women’s competition, world No. 6 Chizuru Arai had to settle for a runnerup finish after losing to Austria’s Bernadette Graf in the 70-kg final.
