Chisato Fukushima won the women's 200 meters and booked her place in this summer's world championships on Saturday, the second day of Japan's national championships.

Fukushima clocked 23.23 seconds to win the title for the fifth year in a row, surging ahead at the start of the home stretch to win comfortably on her 27th birthday. She will now head to the world championships in Beijing in August.

"I'm happy, but I put too much into the first 100 meters. There wasn't a point at the end where I could go up a notch," said Fukushima, slightly disappointed not to break her Japan record of 22.89.

In the men's 200, Kenji Fujimitsu, who had previously surpassed the Japan Association of Athletics Federations' minimum standard to compete at the worlds, booked his place on the national team by winning his first national title in 20.32. Kei Takase, who had already cleared a higher JAAF standard needed to make the team, was second in 20.57 and will join Fujimitsu in the Chinese capital.

Naoto Tobe won the high jump, clearing 2.26 meters, Daiki Ogita claimed the pole vault title with a height of 5.50 meters, and Tetsuya Yoroizaka came first in the men's 10,000 meters, clocking 28 minutes, 18.53 seconds, with all three qualifying to compete at the worlds.

Hiroshi Noguchi became Japan's first new hammer throw champion in 21 years, with a winning throw of 71.98 meters. Koji Murofushi, the 20-time winner, skipped the competition to give younger athletes a chance.

"He was my target and I wanted to defeat him so it is disappointing," said Noguchi of winning the title without defeating Murofushi.
