The Japan men's team placed second to advance to the final as the men's qualification concluded at the Gymnastics World Championships in Nanning, China, on Saturday.

Japan took to the Guangxi Sports Center Gymnasium in the second session of the day and, despite several mistakes on pommel horse and horizontal bar, the squad remained undefeated by the other teams that performed on Saturday.

With a total score of 361.609 Japan, seeking its first team gold at the championships in 36 years, advanced to Tuesday's team final in second behind the top qualifiers of China (362.698).

Aiming for a fifth consecutive individual all-around title, Kohei Uchimura topped qualifying with 92.165 points, and Kenzo Shirai, who last year became Japan's youngest world champion gymnast in winning the floor gold, contributed on the floor with 16.033 points.

However, Kohei Kameyama and Ryohei Kato both took falls in the pommel horse. Shogo Nonomura came off the horizontal bar while Yusuke Tanaka had a bad landing.

"I'm glad I didn't make any mistakes," said Uchimura. "As a team we have to regroup and we have to show what we are strongest at in the final."
