Kinki University said Thursday that former WBA super flyweight champion Nobuo Nashiro has hung up his gloves and he has become head coach of the college's boxing club that he used to belong to.

Nashiro, 32, became world champion in July 2006 in only his eighth professional fight, at the time matching the shortest time in which a Japanese boxer has claimed a world title since his debut.

He lost on a unanimous decision to former champion Alexander Munoz of Venezuela in his second defense of the title the following year.

Nashiro rebounded in 2008, winning a split decision by the thinnest of margins over Kohei Kono to reclaim the belt and went on to successfully defend it twice.
