Alpine skier Naoki Yuasa has undergone an operation for a broken right ankle but will still aim to compete in the men's slalom event at next month's Sochi Olympics, his coach, Naomine Iwaya, said Monday.

The 30-year-old Yuasa hurt his foot when he took a spill competing in a World Cup slalom event on Sunday. He had two bolts inserted in his ankle at a hospital in Innsbruck a day later to repair a fracture in the ankle bone.

Iwaya said the prognosis appears optimistic for Yuasa, who will begin rehab on his ankle as he aims to recover in time to compete in the downhill event in Sochi on Feb. 22.

"It looks as if he will be able to start in the Olympics," said Iwaya.
