Hong Myung-bo, a former veteran player of South Korea's national football team, was named Monday as head coach of South Korea's team to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, according to the country's soccer association.

Hong, 44, was national team captain under Guus Hiddink at the 2002 World Cup when South Korea, which co-hosted with Japan, reached the semifinals for the first time.

As head coach, Hong led South Korea's under-23 team to the bronze medal at the London Olympics last year, the country's first Olympic soccer medal.
