London Olympic men's all-around gymnastics champion Kohei Uchimura was named the Japanese Olympic Committee's most outstanding athlete of 2012 on Tuesday.

Uchimura won the honor for the second straight year following a meeting of the JOC executive board. He became the first Japanese gymnast to win an individual all-around gold in 28 years and also won a silver in the team competition and floor event.

Saori Yoshida in women's wrestling will be specially recognized after winning a third straight Olympic gold last summer and defending her world title for a 10th consecutive time.

The award ceremony will be held June 23 in Tokyo.
