Ai Miyazato grabbed the first-round lead at the LPGA Founders Cup, firing a tournament-record 9-under 63 on a hot afternoon in the desert on Thursday.

In her first competition after suffering a whiplash injury in a five-car pileup in Thailand at the end of February, Miyazato drained seven birdies and one eagle in a bogey-free round and opened a two-stroke lead over South Korea's Lee Jee Young.

"It worked out better for me since I didn't set any high expectations of myself," said Miyazato, who made a 20-foot eagle on the par-5 15th.
