Nishikori won’t play in Davis Cup tie

The Japan Tennis Association announced Tuesday that Kei Nishikori has bowed out of Japan’s first Davis Cup tie of the season.

Nishikori, ranked 18th in the world, reached the fourth round at the Australian Open, but has been playing with pain in his left knee. In order to focus on his recovery, he has decided to skip Japan’s Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone tie against Indonesia in Tokyo from Feb. 1-3.

Without Nishikori, Japan will go into action with 73rd-ranked Go Soeda and No. 84 Tatsuma Ito, who each reached the second round at the Australian Open. Also on the squad are world No. 129 Yuichi Sugita and Yasutaka Uchiyama, who is ranked 400th.
