The wife of new Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles signing Andruw Jones filed for divorce about a week after she accused him of grabbing her neck and saying he wanted to kill her, The Associated Press reported Wednesday.

Nicole Jones said their 10-year marriage is "irretrievably broken," according to the divorce complaint filed in a suburban Atlanta court Monday, the AP report said.

Jones was arrested on a charge of battery on Christmas morning following a drunken fight with his wife. Nicole said she tried to escape upstairs but her husband grabbed her ankle and dragged her down the stairs. He then allegedly got on top of her and said, "I want to kill you." He was freed on bond after the arrest.

On Dec. 16, the Eagles announced they had signed the 35-year-old Jones, who was an 11-time Major League Baseball All-Star with 10 Gold Gloves and 434 home runs. The one-year deal is for ¥300 million, including a signing bonus.

Eagles president Yozo Tachibana said last week that the domestic quarrel that resulted in Jones' arrest was in itself not an obstacle to the outfielder joining the club next season.
