Nadeshiko Japan beaten by France

The Japan national women’s team enters the Olympic tournament on a blue note after the world champions lost 2-0 to France on Thursday.

The French, who will be in Group G at the London Games, opened the scoring in the 24th minute through forward Marie-Laure Delie, who slipped past the back line to score. The hosts sealed victory in the 73rd minute with a goal from defender Wendie Renard off a corner.

Nadeshiko Japan created some chances but the closest they could come to a goal was when Aya Miyama’s free kick struck the post.

“We wanted to win, but they simply outran us,” said Homare Sawa, who captained the team last summer at the Women’s World Cup. “I want to prepare from now on so this defeat won’t have been in vain.”

Japan kicks off its Olympic tournament against Canada in Group F on Wednesday in Coventry.
