BONN – Japan defeated world No. 2 China in the team foil bronze-medal match of a World Cup fencing meet on Sunday.
Beijing Olympic individual silver medalist Yuki Ota sealed victory as Japan, ranked fifth in the world, got revenge on China in a rematch of the Asian championship final last July.
Earlier Sunday, Japan came from behind to beat fourth-ranked France in the quarterfinals before falling to top-ranked Italy in the semis.
“I didn’t do well in the France match, but we still beat them,” Ota said. “The win over France showed Japan’s depth and gives us a confidence boost. At the Olympics, I’ll try to go for gold medals in both individual and team events.”
