Settsu re-signs with champion Hawks

Fukuoka Softbank Hawks right-hander Tadashi Settsu on Thursday re-signed with the Pacific League club, earning a handsome pay raise for his role in helping the team win the league championship and the Japan Series.

The 29-year-old, who last year won 14 games in his first season in the starting rotation, put pen to paper on a deal that will pay him an annual wage of ¥190 million, double what he earned last term.

“The team has shown me they value me and told me I pitched steadily over the course of the season,” said Settsu.

The Hawks will go into the 2012 campaign without three members of their starting rotation — Toshiya Sugiuchi, D.J. Houlton and Tsuyoshi Wada, who combined to win 43 games, almost half of the team’s 88 wins out of 144 regular-season games.
