North America wins skating meet

World champion Patrick Chan outshone Takahiko Kozuka again as North America won the Japan Open figure skating team event for the first time on Saturday.

Chan and fellow Canadians Jeffery Buttle and Olympic bronze medalist Joannie Rochette and American Alissa Czisny combined for 518.64 points for the North Americans, .70 clear of Europe. Host Japan finished last with 479.57.

Chan landed a quad-triple combination jump on the way to the top score of 159.93.

Kozuka (148.21), who finished runnerup behind Chan for silver at the world championships in Moscow in April, placed third in the men’s event but Olympic bronze medalist Daisuke Takahashi was last with 130.79.

World champion Miki Ando also placed last in the women’s event with just 88.11 points. Akiko Suzuki scored 112.46.

Two male and two female skaters each performed free skate programs with the total combined score deciding the winning team.
