Hiroshima gives up Olympic bid

The city of Hiroshima formally gave up its bid Sunday to host the 2020 Summer Olympics due to opposition from its citizens and a lack of funds.

Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui, Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue and officials from the 15 other municipalities decided to dissolve their bidding committee during a meeting in Hiroshima the same day.

The Olympic bid had been pushed by Matsui’s predecessor Tadatoshi Akiba since he announced it in 2009. But the project did not gather steam and Matsui, who was elected mayor in April, has said he will withdraw from it.
